Alton Eugene Applewhite is an American artist based in the Southern United States. Despite having little formal training, he doesn’t consider himself “self-taught”. Instead, he sees himself as a student of the great artists who came before him. The artists who belonged to the Abstract Expressionism movement are the most influential in his work.

Alton’s work is characterized by expressive, energetic brush work. A strong source of his inspiration is from his unconscious impressions from nature and the seasons. He best describes his intentions like this:

“I use the elements of art to communicate from an inner world in which words are insufficient to express. I don’t consider my art to be decoration. Instead, I see each piece as a visual journal entry. There is little planning before each painting, except for consideration of what color may be the dominant one. I create the kind of art that makes me excited when I see it. That excitement can vary from piece to piece, but I never consider time creating a waste or any piece a failure. Of course, it’s my hope that others may find a connection with my art. It’s my goal to create spaces on canvas in which the viewer can explore and interpret their own meaning.”
